I hope your family had a break full of relaxation and enjoyment. It is hard to believe that the end of the third quarter of third grade is right around the corner. The next few weeks with your child, will be weeks of review and preparation for the third nine weeks testing period or Mock SOLs.
LANGUAGE ARTS
By now, the students have been introduced to all of the reading strategies good readers should use in order to effectively read and understand literature. Your child has learned that predicting, visualizing, making connections, summarizing, questioning, drawing conclusions, and determining important facts can be beneficial to readers. Throughout the remainder of the year we will be revisiting and recalling how use these streets while reading. We will also be focusing on how to comprehend and dissect functional text such as recipes, flyers, and posters. Skills such as compare and contrasting, sequencing, cause and effect, fact and opinion, and using context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words will continue to be reviewed as well. Please be sure to have your child read some type of literature for 20- 30 minutes each night.
Math
In the area of Math this quarter the students have now been introduced to measurement(linear, mass, and capacity), fractions(comparing, adding, subtracting, mixed number, and improper), and graphing(bar, pictograph, and line plot). We are currently working on chance and probability. Please continue to review skills your child may be having difficulty with by the visiting IXL website for extra practice. Completing homework and studying nightly can be extremely beneficial to your child.
SS.
We've traveled back in time to study the ancient civilizations and cultures of Greece and Rome. We will move into investigating the civilization of West Africa's Mali in the next two weeks. Many of our assignments in Social Studies are open notes, so it is imperative that students keep up with their notebooks and study notes nightly so that they may locate information easily during class assignments and open note quizzes.
